I have many wood plates. I am wondering if its possible to use them as premade garden beds. remove one side of the slats and put the palate on the ground with the slats on top of the soil. I would use the slats as premade spacers/mini rows, to keep water in and weeds down. Do you think that would work? Thank you for your input

Nadine, thanks for your question. I'm guessing that you are talking about wood pallets that fork lifts pick up and move around in warehouses and on loading docks.

If I'm right, yes, you can take the slats off one side, turn the pallet upside-down so the slats you did not take off are resting on the ground. Then you can sow your seeds in the open slots between the slats. You'll still have a few weeds, but not as many as you would without the pallet.

Another way to stop weeds is spreading newspaper and mulch on the ground before you put in plants. This works for seeds too. You have to leave a narrow gap in the newspapers for the seeds. I posted a lot of photos about this newspaper/mulch thing at my part of YourGardenShow. To see the photos, click here.

he title for the photos is "New garden, no weeds." To see all the photos together, click on "see full post" (small blue letter to the right of  "New garden, no weeds"). The photos are small. Click on any one to make it large and see the caption for it.

Hope this helps. If you need more information, send Ask Ian another question.
