Any special tips for garlic. We are first time growers...200 + cloves planted. They look beautiful and tall...still waiting for scopes. Any little tips for the best garlic?

Hi,  I went to a gardening class over the weekend and we chatted about garlic...the host's garlic was 3 feet tall and beautiful!!  Scoops were just starting...so you should see many within 10 days or so (yummy).....With planting many cloves...(our host had I believe 600) it is important to plan on how you will dry them.  The farm I was at, had a great "rake like" system on one of the ceiling of their potting shed.  We were instructed to grow about 5 different types to start...and see what grows well ....then cut it down to the two best growers.  Have fun!!

@Bloom: Thanks for the advice on the scapes and garlic.  I wish we could make a little shed just for this! Happy Gardening!

@PrinceSnow: I planted about 30 cloves last fall (Softneck varity I bought 3 bulbs from Whole Foods).  I harvested them in the beginning of May.  This was my first time Planting.  I basically followed this Mother Earth New artical.

http://www.motherearthnews.com/grow-it/how-to-plant-garlic.aspx

other links in this article lead me to Seeds of Italy where I found out a few thing I did wrong.  Again I planted Softnecks.  I found out when you plant Garlic use only the Large Cloves to get sizable bulbs.  If you want to use the small cloves then plant them separate from the rest so you can pick the whold plant for greens like you would Green onions.  When I harvested the bulbs I had many small bulbs, about 1/3 of them.  I was carefully not to try to pull them out of the ground by the stalk, I reached under the bulb with my finger up uproot them.  I then braided 4 plants together, tied them to a long Twine rope.   When I had the rope filled with Garlic I hung the rope in my garage to allow to dry for 6 weeks.  I used about 2 bunchs of 4 before the rest was fully dry.  My garage is dark in the back side and has good ventilation.  My wife and I are really happy the way it turned out for our first time.

Make sure you cut the scapes off so not to take away from the development of the garlic bulb.  Tip: I pickled mine.

@KathyC: Hi Kathy, thank you for the tip, in my case I planted softneck garlic.  They don't grow scapes.  I need to try both Hardneck and Softnect this fall.  thanks again.

@Ian-Cooke: Oh...and I did know it was scapes not scopes....I hate that computer because it autocorrects me when I don't need correcting. Too funny. I will have some more good questions for you. My husband and I enjoyed and appreciated your responses!
