My State Fair Zinnias are getting demolished by some sort of bug.  Any suggestions as to saving them at this point?

There are two safe pesticides you could try. I don't know if either will balk your unknown pests but they're worth a try. At the least you can tell us what happened. One is neem oil, sprayed on the zinnias. It seems to make insects lose their appetite. The other is Safer's Soap, basically a concentrate of the elements in soap that kill insects. You mix neem or SS with water and spray the dilute mixture directly on your plants. You have to keep agitating the neem mixture to keep the oil and water from separating. Hope this helps.

@Groundskeeper: Cant you add a bit of dish soap 1-4 drops per bottle as a surfactant to better emulsify the water and oil?

@Groundskeeper: Thanks for providing a solution to try.  Unfortunately two of my plants have bit the dust....I just have 2 left to see if this will work...

@FreyjaW: Yes you can. It helps with spraying horticultural oil too. I'm glad you reminded all of us.

are they Japanese beetles? They have just arrived. We are only 50 minutes south of you, and they tend to bother ours a bit too.

@PrinceSnow: I'm not sure as I can't seem to catch the pests in action.  I just see the aftermath.

@Kristen: Maybe the timing is a clue.

Another idea: considering the extent of the damage you're seeing, would the pest have to be as large as a Japanese beetle, at least?

@Kristen: Okay, they could be Japanese beetles. If you still haven't seen the varmints perhaps they're in and out. When they're out, you can cover your plants or large parts of your plot with floating row, anchored at the edges with stones, 2 by 4's, what have you. Here's one assortment from Johnny's Select Seeds. A good garden center will also have an assortment

Maybe the use of a sticky trap would help ID the culprit?

@FreyjaW: Oh, that's a good idea. I think most of us could use sticky traps this way to learn more about the pests in our gardens (and the beneficial insects).

@Kristen: also, be careful if you put out traditional beetle traps...keep them a good distance from your plants...otherwise, you actually attract them to your garden....

@FreyjaW: thanks for the caution about flea beetles and sticky traps.

Row cover fabric thwarts flea beetles, but only if applied before they arrive. One way: cut a square of fabric, shape into a rough sphere around the plant and gather the corners and edges together around the stem of the plant near the ground, then twist-tie the gathered section. Make the sphere sizeable to leave room for growth.

You have to shake the plants when they flower to knock the pollen loose.
