There's nothing better than getting kids started in the garden early.  I like to start them out eating something in the garden so that they have the visual and the taste to remind them that it is worth the work and the patience!

I agree. My kids are 8 and 13. My 8 yr old loves to garden...just like I did at that age.

@PrinceSnow: Also...our kids are eating veggies (finally)...picking the sweetest peas and beans ever.  Let them in, become a part of the action..they feel connected...and eat the fruit of their labor!

When I worked with public school kids, they loved "getting planted"! It let's them experience what it's like to be a plant and helps develop a fascination with plants and gardening. YourGardenShow has a blog post all about it here.

Other activities we enjoyed were bug searches (finding a bug and working together to identify it) and scavenger hunts. What's so fun about the garden is that the possibilities for experiential learning are endless and, at the same time, can instill kids with a lifelong interest in the garden, and fresh fruits and veggies.

@Agrarian: So true! My husband got his students out banding and identifying trees with the help of the town's tree committee. To me, it's these old-fashioned type activities that will lead youth to care about the Earth
