Video reply: Why there is no durable solution for deer other than a big fence; the amount of deer per acre where research would indicate an epidemic. Deer are becoming a huge issue due to increased population and no natural predator; deer are very good at breeding and the herds get bigger and stronger. If you get heavy snow late in the winter, most of the low-lying food for deer is still covered up, so deer will get into garden spaces big and small and eat anything - they will graze on plants until they are down to a stub.
There are some things that are not on the deer's menu like boxwood and pieris. If you're growing vegetables, a deer fence is the way to go. Deer fences can be costly, but you can build one yourself or get a DIY fence-building kit.
