How much should you water tomatoes? Some say not so much, others say the same as the rest of the garden. What do you say?

Tomatoes need regular watering. The key is very little variation in soil moisture. If the soil goes dry or you soak the ground, the tomatoes are likely to rot at the blossom end. This is very common, alas. The practice of watering heavily at intervals of three or four days often cause cracks in tomatoes that are nearing maturity. All in all, moist soil (not wet soil) all through the growing season. Hope this helps.

Video reply: Why it's important to be consistent in your tomato plant hydration; how to avoid rips and tears in the skin of tomatoes.

Tomatoes, along with pumpkins, cucumbers, melons and pole beans, have a high demand for water. Also, when you water, avoid wetting all the foliage - and this is true for other plants, not just tomatoes.
