Has anyone ever seen anything like this and can help me with some sort of an explanation? Frankly, I'm baffled! Our carrots have not done well; they were planted back on March 21 (man I love being able to look back in our glog and know exactly when I planted something...my memory alone cannot be trusted with that chore!) and were slow in growing their leaves, which have not increased in size at all in the last month. I pulled a few random ones up a few weeks ago to see what was going on beneath the soil and there were tiny little carrots, really tiny. Now the plants have put out this very bizarre, carrot colored and smelling, tangle of carrot hairs! It is like something out of a horror movie. Attack of the killer carrots! What is up?

@Kristen: They are about an inch to and inch and a half apart; close but not extremely. Sorry I thought I attached a picture. I will edit the comment now!

@YourGardenShow: that soil looks super dry...did the rain yesterday help at all?

@Kristen: It is a drought here without a doubt! Some storm we had yesterday...10 minutes of intense wind (that knocked over three corn stalks), about 5 minutes of super light drizzle and about three hours without power. Not exactly what all my rain dancing was calling for!

We are lucky that we have the well to water with everyday but the beds without mulch are still close to bone dry by the end of the day with this heat.

It kind of looks like carrot leaf blight

The leaves look withered for lack of water. Carrots, like tomatoes, need steady moisture in the top foot of soil to grow full-sized and plump. Dry spells and heat stunt the roots and change their flavor by boosting the terpenes (the source of bitterness and turpentine taste).

@Groundskeeper: My carrots are looking similar and I think it's due to our heat and water.  I've been watering them but probably not enough for the heat.
