19 May - I bought some perennial herbs, including this silver English thyme.

19 May - Broccoli from Canadian Tire. I gave up on growing the broccoli from seed after two batches died of damping off.

20 May - Still a bit cool out, so I placed 4L milk jugs (bottoms cut out) over the broccoli to protect them (they were from Canadian Tire, so, I doubted their quality)

20 May - Compost bin looking pretty happy.

16 May - Zucchini seedling beginning to flower! Perhaps from stress...

26 May - Broccoli seedlings (from seed), still alive.

26 - Sticky nightshade (morelle de balbis) seedling from friend.

30 May - All my seedlings, hardening off in direct sunlight on a beautiful day!

30 May - Gai Lan (Chinese Broccoli) flower. My mom takes gai lan from the grocery store and always saves one to pot because she likes the flowers. Go figure!

16 Jun - Salad. I'm always way too late with my salad planting.

16 Jun - Apples (gala) are showing more colour! I forgot to hose the flowers, so we had a lot of aborted fruit.

20 Jun - Some perennial herbs: oregano (greek), lemon thyme, lemon balm, and a sprig of silver thyme in the upper-right corner.

30 Jun - Our peas kept getting eaten by birds. Poor guys.

30 Jun - Radishes flowering. I let the rest go to seed so I could harvest the seed pods. When you plant a radish and harvest the root, you get one root per seed. If you harvest the seed pods, you get maybe a hundred per seed.

4 Jul - Broccoli, carrots, radishes. The gigantic towering ones are radishes I've let go to flower, so I can harvest the gajillions of seedpods.

4 Jul - Zucchini, finally putting out some female flowers!

4 Jul - Daisies! Such a simple thing to make me so happy!

7 Jul - Bachelor's buttons (cornflower) and chamomile.

7 Jul - Finally, some the birds have left us some peace--and peas!

11 Jul - Sticky nightshade flowers and prickles.

11 Jul - Gala apples showing some colour.

16 Jul - Bachelor's buttons (cornflower)

16 Jul - Tomatoes and sticky nighshade climbing a 6ft fence... Last year, they just made it to the top, while some cherry tomatoes actually climbed over!

16 Jul - Fuzzy orgyia antiqua caterpillar. I hate moths so much. But this guy is kind of cute.

21 Jul - I caved in and bought a bell pepper plant from Canadian Tire. This was one of the first flowers.

27 Jul - Zucchini, getting carried away!

27 Jul - Tomatoes and sticky nightshade, climbing 6ft fence.

27 Jul - Purple Prince tomatoes, still green.

27 Jul - Gala apples! We get probably 150 of them on an average year.

27 Jul - Genovese basil looking very happy.

27 Jul - Monarch caterpillars on the swamp milkweed.

30 Jul - Radish seedpods. They're spicy raw, but as soon as you expose them to heat, they lose their peppery punch.

5 Aug - The roundest and most perfect of our homegrown gala apples. I'm so proud! *sniffle*

5 Aug - Sunsugar cherry tomatoes, coming into colour. We had another clutch of them succumb to some kind of disease, so these were the first survivors of the season.

7 Aug - The zucchini are getting a bit crazy.

7 Aug - This is how tall our nightshades got. I stopped pruning them to encourage more flower and fruit.

7 Aug - Sunsugar cherry tomatoes almost ready....

8 Aug - I had to prune back the zucchini because we got hit by powdery mildew again. Last year, the excessive damp caused everything to get powdery mildew; so I suspected it might be a problem again this year, since I don't practice crop rotation.

8 Aug - Powdery mildew. I pruned pretty heavily to get rid of affected leaves, then gave a dusting of baking soda. I figure plants can recover from baking soda burns better than mildew can!

8 Aug - My mom grew some of the leftover cherry tomatoes in pots. I suspect the restricted root size caused the tiny currant-sized fruits!

8 Aug - The sprig of silver thyme I tried to propagate seems to be successful!

9 Aug - My mom insists on growing huge zucchini. I find them gross, but she loves them. I think it's more of a point of pride, or maybe a utilitarian thing: "more is better". I prefer tasty!

11 Aug - Wasps made homes out of some apples.

11 Aug - A black Krim tomato begins, slowly, tantalisingly, to take on colour...

11 Aug - Plenty of Sunsugar cherry tomatoes now!

11 Aug - Squash bug? Sounds like a good plan!

15 Aug - This is what happens when I leave my parents to tend the garden for less than a week! Massive zucchinis!

16 Aug - After less than a week, the zucchini needed pruning again. Also, a branch crawled out of the bed and is making its way toward the lanw!

16 - Black swallowtail caterpillar, munching my carrots! No! Eat the parsley, it's cheaper!!

16 Aug - Wasps continue to make homes in our apples.

16 Aug - Tomatoes and nightshade taking over the fence. The Brandywines got hit by some disease, and I had to severely prune the leaves. They're also the slowest-growing; they're the three in the middle.

16 Aug - Today's harvest: a juicy purple prince tomato, a few clutches of "Valiant" grapes, and a sugar snap pea!

25 Aug - Brandywine tomatoes, almost ready...

25 Aug - Today's tomato harvest, another view.

25 Aug - Purple prince tomato. I think these were my favourite this year.

26 Aug - Bell peppers (from Canadian Tire) growing slowly...

26 Aug - Today's harvest: 2 purple prince tomatoes, 5 sunsugar cherries, 3 tiny cherries, and 1 snow pea.

27 Aug - Today's harvest: 2 zucchinis, 1 brandywine, 1 black Krim, 7 sunsugar cherries.

27 Aug - Black Krim tomato, sliced open. It's ok, I know it's sexy.

1 Sep - Brandywine tomato, kind of ugly.

1 Sep - An unevenly ripened purple prince tomato.

1 Sep - A tomato sammich made with brandywine tomato. It's ok to drool.

2 Sep - Our tomatoes, climbing up the 6ft fence.

3 Sep - Sticky nighshade fruit, not quite ready.  It turns red when ripe.<br>

9 Sep - I leave my parents for a week, and this happens. Massive zucchinis.

9 Sep - Brandywine tomato. It better resembles a pumpkin.

21 Sep - This is the end of late-summer, and this is how tall our tomatoes have grown! I never measured it, but I suspect that one sunsugar on the right got to at least 10ft.

21 Sep - End of season. This zucchini managed to climb out of the bed and onto the lawn.

12 May - Zucchini seedling. I always think the cotyledons look like a mouth.

15 Aug - Black Krims, taking on some colour.
