These tools - a rake, hoe, spading fork, trowel, and line for marking rows - are sufficient for most small vegetable gardens. |

What tools do I need for a small vegetable garden?I would add a good hand weeder. I originally had (and lost) a Cape Cod weeder. The one I'm using now has an L-shaped blade. I can easily drag it thru the soil to get rid of small weeds as they emerge but I can also use it to tug out the tough ones. If a hunk of witch grass has started, I can loosen the soil to get more of the runner roots.

What tools do I need for a small vegetable garden?A garden rake to spread mulch, a trowel to open planting holes for young plants. I agree with frostedmom about hand weeders that work when you pull them toward you. This spares your wrist. Digging tools. I almost never use them, aside from planting trees and shrubs. Instead, I improve the soil without digging. I use a common method--compost and mulch year-round. For more about this see my post here at YourGardenShow. Look for "New garden, no weeds" and click on "see full post" (there are 22 photos with captions). Hope this helps answer your question.
