In what direction is it best to plant a vegetable garden, north and south or east and west?

It makes very little difference. What is more important is the location of the tall-growing vegetables with reference to the low-growing kinds. Plant the low plants on the east or south sides. Keep tall ones in the back where they will not shade the others.

I've planted both E-W and S-N. Couldn't see a difference.

Theoretically (that is if your garden were graph paper and the sun's path never changed), E-W would be superior, provided you arranged the plants by height the tallest in the northern rows and the shortest in the southern rows. But such precision is maybe impossible. Finally, I think there's more sunlight in both orientations than the plants can use.
