Echinacea 'Matthew Saul'

HARVEST MOON is a new hybrid coneflower in the Big Sky Series from Richard Saul of Itsaul Nurseries in Atlanta, Georgia. It is reportedly the result of 2003 cross-pollination of two unnamed <i>Echinacea</i> hybrid selections. This is an upright and columnar plant with free branching that typically grows in a clump to 24-29î tall and to 18\ wide on sturdy stems that do not need staking. It is reportedly the result of 2003 cross-pollination of two unnamed <i>Echinacea</i> hybrid selections. This is an upright and columnar plant with free branching that typically grows in a clump to 24-29î tall and to 18\ wide on sturdy stems that do not need staking. It is noted for its large, slightly-fragrant coneflowers (to 2 1/2î diameter) featuring downward-sloping, deep golden yellow rays with orange center cones. Flowers bloom from late spring to late summer, sometimes with additional sporadic bloom until frost. Strigose, coarsely-toothed, dark green leaves (to 4-5î long) are lanceolate. Good fresh cut or dried flower. The dead flower stems will remain erect well into the winter, and if flower heads are not removed, the blackened cones are often visited by goldfinches that feed on the seeds. Echinacea comes from the Greek word ìechinosî meaning hedgehog in reference to the flowers spiny center cone. U. S.
