Plants produce 4- to 5-inch, nearly round, white-fleshed roots with purple shoulders. Young leaves can be cooked as greens. Also known as 'Purple-Top Globe'.

In early spring to late summer, sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch (.5 - 1 cm) deep, 1 inch (2 cm) apart in rows 12 - 18 inches (30 - 45 cm) apart. Thin plants to 4 - 6 inch (10 - 15 cm) spacings. For a continuous harvest throughout the year, plant every 2 weeks, keeping in mind that flavor and quality are best if harvested in cool weather. Do not plant turnips or other cole crops in the same place more than once every 3-4 years to help reduce disease, and floating row covers help protect from early pests.
