Kohlrabi has an engorged base with heavy leaves off the top giving it an unique appearance. Although a cool-season crop, it can be grown spring through summer and makes an interesting addition to any available spaces in the ornamental garden.
Direct seed a month before last frost in 12 inch (30 cm) rows. Seeds should be ½ inch (1 cm) deep and 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart, later thinned to 6 inches (15 cm). While it prefers the cool weather (in the 60s F (15 to 20C) it can be grown through the season in some regions. Even a short period of freezing will cause bolting and several days below 50F (10C) will set flowering. Sow directly or transplant in summer for a fall harvest.
