Burdock

A member of the aster family, it is beautiful in bloom but considered to be course of leaf. Its bloom attracts butterflies and birds. Its structure was the inspiration for the hook-and-loop system of Velcro (tm). It is widely used in macrobiotic diets.

Burdock is easy to grow and can be found as a weed in locations with the right growing conditions. It is often used medicinally as a diuretic (helping rid the body of excess water), and as a topical remedy for skin problems such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.   • Easy care, often found growing wild and in disturbed areas.

Seeds can be harvested from existing plants by removing burrs when they are easy to pull. Sow seed directly in loose, sandy soil in sun or partial shade. Seeds are sown in early spring to summer ¼ inch (60 mm) deep and keep moist but not waterlogged. Space to 4 inches (10 cm) and keep well weeded.

Its tap root can reach over 40 inches (1 meter) long and is eaten for its sweet pungent taste in Asian cuisine and is the main ingredient in a popular soft drink in the U.K.
