Best grown in moist, acidic, well-drained soils in part shade. Tolerates full sun, but soils should not be allowed to dry out. The species is not reliably winter hardy to the St. Louis area where it should perhaps not be attempted, but if attempted, should be sited in a southern exposure protected from winter winds. Branches killed by winter should be promptly pruned out. Cunninghamia lanceolata ëGlaucaÃ, an attractive blue form, reportedly has better winter hardiness (to ñ10 F.) than the species and is a better choice for St. Louis.
