Peanuts

When all danger of frost has passed, shell raw peanuts and sow directly outdoors in loose, sandy soil, free from rocks and debris. Prepare the soil prior to planting several inches deep. If drainage is not good then plant seeds in mounds. If your growing season is less than 130 to 140 days then start seeds indoors 2 to 4 weeks prior to last frost in individual peat pots. Transplant in the pots to eliminate transplant shock. Seeds are sown 1 to 2 inches (2 to 5 cm) deep. Transplant or space to 6 to 7 inches (15 to 18 cm) in 3 foot (90 cm) rows. The peanut pegs will grow out of the stem and down into the soil. Hard soil should be mulched a few inches deep with a layer of sand beneath that. Peanuts are harvested after the first frost of the year by removing the entire plant and drying.
