Athyrium filix-femina var. angustum, commonly known as northern lady fern, is a deciduous, upright fern that typically grows to 36î tall and features light green fronds on short-creeping rhizomes. It is native to eastern and central North America and is somewhat common in Missouri, particularly north of the Missouri River (Steyermark). ëLady in Red is a cultivar that typically grows slightly smaller (18-30î tall) and features elliptic lacy light green fronds with contrasting burgundy-red stipes. Synonymous with Athyrium angustum f. rubellum ëLady in Red.

Easily grown in humusy, organically rich, medium moisture, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Best sited in sheltered locations. Soil must not be allowed to dry out. Naturalizes well by creeping rhizomes and can form colonies in optimum growing conditions.
