ëCardinal is a densely-branched, broad-spreading crabapple tree that typically matures to 15 tall and to 25 wide. It is noted for its spreading shape, bright red flowers, purple-tinged foliage, small glossy red fruit and excellent disease resistance. Narrow-ovate leaves (to 3î long) emerge purplish-red in spring and mature to dark green tinged with reddish-purple. Purple buds open in spring to red flowers (1.5î diameter). Best grown in loamy, medium moisture, well-drained, acidic soil in full sun. Adapts to a wide range of soils however. Prune as needed in late winter.
