I grew up with a grandmother that was a professional Baker and hobby gardener.  I would spend hours with her in the garden, that was mostly flowers and some vegetables.  I would play under the fig tree, eating just ripe figs from the tree, while she would labor in the planting, pruning and cleaning. I watched my grandfather espalier a pyracantha bush to the garage wall. I marveled that he could train that bush to grow like that.  I grafted my first rose at age 11. I know that my appreciation of growing things came from my grandparents.  I have always been involved with plants and  animals.  My first job as a teen was selling flowers by the roadside.  I later sold plants at a retail nursery. Then I worked for a wholesale plant farm and became a Texas Certified Nurseryman in 1980.  I started my own interior/patio plant landscaping company and did the deck plantings for model homes for a short while. I was a florist for 10 years in the 80s.  I divorced in 1991 and realized I needed a real career to support my 3 children (infant twins and a 2 yr. old), so I enrolled in nursing school. Then became a registered nurse in 1994.  All the while being a fulltime mother since 1988.  I bought my first home in 2001.  Landscaped and maintained it myself. I met my love, Adam, in 2007. He has been an inspiration for me.  We started an organic garden, with the help of my family and have been growing organically ever since.  Whew!  What a busy life I have had.  Thank goodness it is calming down, somewhat in my old age!  Future plans are to buy a nice piece of East Texas forest/pasture to retire on.  I will always have an organic garden. The earth is way too polluted to add to it with garden chemicals.  There are so many ways to correct problems that don't require chemicals.  Natural balance in the garden is the best way.  I am a firm believer!

from one hobbyist to another your garden's are so beautiful. when you have the time i think you should take a look at this new greentool product it leaves zero carbon footprint . http://bit.ly/KJ66Qx thanks

@sarahgarden: They look good and almost zero carbon footprint...but not zero, because, as many people forget, it has to be charged.  Where does electricity come from?  A coal burning energy plant.  I'll stick with the push mower as it is nearly zero, although someone had to melt the metal to make those also...so not zero either.  That is a misleading statement.

In 1980 I worked for a wholesale greenhouse/nursery grower in Houston, Texas.  I was certified by the Texas Association of Nurserymen.  I later went to work in a retail nursery.  Then a few years later I went to work in a couple florist shops.  I have always had a garden or yard or potted plants to care for.  Five years ago, I met Adam.  He has had extensive experience gardening and fixing appliances, motors, tractors...anything, really.  We immediately connected.Since then we have had great fun and interesting conversations.  He always has an idea that clicks with what I am thinking.  We decided to grow an organic garden to provide our family with wholesome local food. He is the one that taught me composting.  His Granny had a farm and he knows a lot about growing things, so with our combined efforts, we started our backyard garden about 4 years ago.  We started with that awful clay dirt and twice a year ammended if with our own compost.  Now our soil is just right.  Loamy and rich.  We have some of the healthiest plants I have ever grown...and healthiest weeds, too!  When choosing plants to grow, we like Heirloom varieties, because we save the seed to share with family and friends...and next year's planting. This is a new forum for us and we are happy to share and receive information on gardening.

The drought in Texas and many other states has really affected our garden.  We have lost ninety percent of our strawberries.  The ten percent that survived may come back stronger when we stop having triple digit heat here in Texas. We need some rain!  A nice tropical storm or two would help.  keyword "nice".
