Gardening since 2009
I'm a teacher, wife, mother, and grandmother whose interest in gardening has been rekindled after many busy years filled with work and family. My garden is located in a dry tropics region of north Queensland and the climate and weather conditions here can be quite challenging! But I'm whole-heartedly enjoying getting out there and having a go!

Hi Bernie, Hope all is well and look forward to seeing your season unfold, By chance, do you keep bees?  You seem to have most of the other important garden pollinator processes in motion!  I am on the hunt to find photos of the critters quick.  We are redoing  the homepage of the site with pollinators in honor of the US Department of Agriculture's Pollinator week - and taking it forward to Facebook and beyond (with full attribution of course, and we can link to your blog/glog).  We are also going to be in Washington DC at the USDA Pollinator summit.  Again, looking for any bee photos by Monday and hope you might help out! Best wishes for a great winter Down Under.

Hi Bernie, Betty told me that you were in Australia and I found you. I love your garden. I lived in Brisbane for several months so I know the climate there. I am surprised everything is so green  in your garden. I do not have a camera at present so am unable to send any pictures. Also I am having a little trouble figuring out how this web site works but keep trying. I love to work in my little garden. I am crazy about flowers. I have gazania and geraniums blooming right now and they are a picture. Thanks for sharing-Yvonne

@Yvonne:G'day Yvonne.  I lived in Brisbane too for a short time and that's where my sons and grandchildren are living now.  I've got a soft spot for Brissie.  It's very unusual for my garden to be green ... you are right.  But we had an extraordinarily... wet 'dry' season last year and then a very heavy 'wet' season this year.  This area hasn't looked green all year round in at least the 30 or so years that I've lived here.  It makes a lovely change.I too am crazy about flowers and it's almost time to pot up the annuals for this year.  Rather later than usual, but as I said, we had a 'wet' like no other so it's taken a while for me to get seedlings started.  I'm afraid I lost all the Gazanias and Geraniums, which I also love, during the wet season so I have to start all over again with those.I'll be looking forward to seeing lots of your flower photos and garden shots.

I am so sorry you received extensive damage by the storm! I know how that must have made you feel! I know you will get it back together again.

Thank you for the compliments on my garden journal.  No, I am not an artist, but love using other people's artwork.  I used lots of drawings from calendars in this book along with some other things. The entries have really slowed down this winter  because the garden activity... has slowed in our unusually cold winter!

Thank you for all your comments. We must share a similar climate. Our rain really is almost none existant in the winter but, have a lot of rain in the summer. Here in central Florida we can go for years without freezing temperatures and no killing frost but, sadly we have had three years in a row of freezing weather.  I will have some replanting to do about the last of next month.

@Betty:It does sound like we have a similar climate.  Here we usually have a very long 'dry' season from Autumn through to early Summer, and then a short 'wet' season.  2010 was a little different though.  It was an unseasonably wet 'dry' season and we received lots of rain over the nine months when we usually get little or none.My state of Queensland had its wettest year on record with dire consequences when the 'wet' season finally arrived in early December.  It seems like there's definitely a change to the old patterns of weather.I have had to do some re-thinking as well.  I have loads of sun, heat and drought tolerant plants that can make it through a short 'wet', but they don't like rain all year long and grey overcast skies.  We'll have to see what 2011 holds in store!
