REVELLING IN THE WILD GARDEN May 04, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Thank goodness Mother Nature has so many things planted at all times. This weather has been crazy. Hot and sunny in March so the syrup run was half what it usually is...snow in April with a week of weather that would put Florida to shame...an early hatch of mosquitos and black flies. I see that my peas have been in since the... ...see more

I have no hopes of winning this at such a late start, but just joining in seems to help fire up my passion about what a healthy thing I am doing by growing food for my family. I have many heirloom choices to plant for my garden this year including Brandywine tomatoes, Cherokee Purples, New England Pie pumpkins, Cinderella pumpkins,... ...see more

There are still plenty of chances of winning lottery tickets for the Grand Prize drawing.  The tallies zero out at the end of each theme, so all will have a clean slate as of April 16th for the "Plant" portion of the contest....good luck!

My Open Arms Welcome Spring Mar 21, 2012

What a strange weather pattern this February and March. Today it is 80 degrees here in the mountains of western Maine. I was out throwing frisbees for the dog and caught a glimpse of an adult bald eagle flying up river(The Ole Androscoggin) first thing this morning. We finished a boil of maple sap yesterday and though we have... ...see more

That is a great picture. It almost looks as though it belongs in earlier times. I hear you on the unseasonably warm weather. Here in Kansas we did not have a winter (typically we get a bunch of snow and ge... (more)

I'm excited. I ordered my seeds for next year's garden...trying some new greens and some different summer and winter squashes. This is the year I finally get to plant my Totem Pole Herb Garden right next to the kitchen. It's the first landscape project of 2012...and the hopeful list includes pruning the ancient apple and pear... ...see more

Over the past 3 days, I pulled out tomato plants, winter and summer squash plants and all the dead basil, tomatillos, cucumber vines and whatever else I could find. I hauled them all to a place where we can burn either in later fall or in early spring so the spores of leafspot and powdered mildew can be cleansed. I might even... ...see more

There was talk of 3 days of frost back on September 16-18. I frantically harvested so that the damage to food would be minimal...and as I do every year, I secretly prayed that the frost would come. I always follow a pattern to my garden attention that very much resembles mothering a child. The spring garden is my tender baby.I... ...see more

Asparagus in back? Asparagus beetles are the bane of my bed. They skin the plants. A few are joined by many every Spring. I'm going to try clothing the whole bed in row cover fabric.
