Never so happy... May 16, 2013
Activity-icon-status

as when I can dig in the dirt.  Root crops went in over the last few days, early and winter potatoes, carrots, beets, onions and garlic.  And some of those early peas I planted are over 3 cms tall now.

Signs of summer - purple finches are back, blackbirds and wrens, robins are running over the lawn every morning and evening...

I always enjoy reading your notes on the progress of the season - I really should pay much closer attention than I do.  Happy planting!

Spring is finally here. May 04, 2013
Activity-icon-status

Weather notes: First robin seen April 29, in the evening, after about 7 inches of spring snow had fallen.  Snow geese are now going through, many ducks and other geese, and the juncos are still here.  Warm sunny day, prospect of frost yet next week but yard work can go full steam ahead and planting of hardier veggies and flowers....

Signs of Spring Apr 10, 2013
Activity-icon-status

Just for record keeping:  First crows seen - March 27, first geese - March 28, first junco - April 6.  Grosbeaks have left the feeder but common polls still here.  All point to lateness of the spring.  -19 C here this morning.  No sign of robins yet.

Spring is still coming Apr 05, 2013

Weather notes:  Snowing - again.  The snow pack had decreased considerably and this will melt fast once it warms up.  Hoar frost notes - third week of March was quite frosty each morning- looked beautiful.  The 'Weather Neighbour' that we all ask for predictions says mostly nice for the next forty days from Good Friday.

Still...

Weather notes - hoar frost this past week, two mornings.  Above zero today, nice for February the past three days.

Blue has chased the moose from right under the house now.  Used to be wildlife was afraid of us - what happened??  There were nine deer in the hayfield south of the house at dusk today, they are bunching up for...

My daughter had a few heads start sprouting, so into a sandwich baggie with wet paper towel, till the roots were sprouted. Not all the cloves had roots, but some were getting a little long, so they went into dirt Saturday. This is too early, but they lo Feb 25, 2013

Hoar frost this morning, sundogs Wednesday morning and Thursday afternoon.  Dipped to -18C last night but warmer air is on the way.

Funny how any garden record becomes a wildlife record.  This morning the moose was up by the house again, had to go onto the deck and yell at him to get him away from the trees.  The grossbeaks...

A moose!  How cool to see a moose in your yard.....but seeing it eating your plants and trees would not be fun.

Gotta love how pretty everything looks in a hoar frost! Those are my favorite mornings :)

Did I miss something? What happened to the dog? You should re-post the porcupine pics. They won't open!
%@#*& Porcupine Feb 04, 2013

When a porcupine shows up in the shed, capture and move it far away, if you can, or eliminate it by more drastic means.  I took a couple photos of it hiding in the bales, and then a couple shots of the garden under the snow, just because it looked nice.

This morning, I looked out and what do I see?  Nothing but tracks where...

The Beginning Jan 27, 2013
Activity-icon-status

Started going through the bag of seeds today, picking out what needs to be on the list to order for this year.

Weather notes:  Hoarfrost was around  a few days the 3rd week of November and the middle weeks of December.  Beautiful to see, now I will watch for corresponding moisture.

Today the sun was bright, sun dogs after 1600...

Two feet of snow.....I guess I shouldn't be complaining with 3 or 4 inches!  A fun job.....looking through seeds and deciding what seeds to buy for this year.  Have fun planning your 2013 garden!

Winter is coming! The pumpkins have started turning, there's a hint of yellow in some of the aspen poplar leaves, and that fall smell is in the air in the early morning. Last row of peas will be done producing, too.

It was so cold at 6 this morning I was surprised there wasn't frost. I could see my breath!
Wasn't awake enough to think about checking the thermometer.

It's a little late in the year to start a project like this, but the vegetable garden is lush and growing very well, mostly due to the extra moisture we've received this year.
