Rose Rosette Disease Nov 07, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Sometimes the best way to learn about a new plant disease is to see it for the first time in person. While passing a neighbor's rose, I noticed it had the most irregular tip growth imaginable. The unusually reddish leaves were dense, fine and the growth reminded me of a stunted witch's broom (a physiological... ...see more

Aconitum carmichaelii Oct 03, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Few fall blue blooms can match those of Aconitum carmichaelii. The tall tiers of bright violet-blue hooded flowers are electric and look beautiful planted alongside late goldenrods and perennial sunflowers. Just be wary when planting this poisonous monkshood in gardens where children play. Mine are always give a space in the... ...see more

Love blue and purple in nature....it's just so unexpected...and so welcome.

Totally new to me. Thanks Jessie. Gotta try it. Here in Des Moines we grow the usual monkshood, which has an elongated flowering habit that looks sparse compared to the dense flower cluster of your plant.
Zatta Melon! Aug 29, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Our first 'Zatta' melon matured! Also called "brutto ma buono" ("ugly but good") in Italy, this hard-skinned melon is super sweet but small. The kids wondered over its bizarre hard skin. The skin smelled fragrant from afar when it was time to harvest it.

Apricot Raspberry Honey Butter Aug 16, 2012
Activity-icon-status

It began as an experiment and ended with something yummy. Somehow I became stuck with nearly a quart of fresh raspberries and fresh apricots that my girls were not eating fast enough. In the spirit of frugality, I cooked the fruit down into a sort of apricot raspberry honey butter of deliciousness that... ...see more

Sounds wonderful!  Apricots are my favorite.. and to add raspberries, what a great idea.  Wish I would have thought of that when I had both fruits.  Guess there is always next year!  :) ;) :)

Poppyseeds From Flower to Harvest Jul 23, 2012
Activity-icon-status

My poppy seeds dried to perfection in the summer heat and were harvested this past weekend. They are one of the most beautiful, carefree herbal flowers. Once you plant them, you need never plant them again because they self-sow so efficiently (but not too efficiently). In honor of their harvest, I made a lemon poppyseed zucchini... ...see more

That  sounds wonderful, would love to have the recipe.  Would love to have some poppies.  What variety do you have?  I want to grow them for seeds next year.  I love the poppy seed... more »
April Showers? Apr 12, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Where's the rain for cryin out loud? This is the first spring in memory where I've had to actively water my peas, lettuce, carrots and other young, tender garden seedlings. There's something about rainwater that makes them flourish in a way that faucet water just can't.

My indoor seedlings have been hardening off nicely. Today... ...see more

We just got some rain here in Boston!  I wish that I could get the peas in the ground right now but it is too cold up here...I am starting them indoors - we'll see if I can trick the system!
SweetDomesticity replied about 1 year ago
We could use a little rain here, too!  We've had a few rainy days, but just enough to get things wet-ish, not to really soak in.

The last seeds I have to buy for the season are for a few funky perennials at alplains.com. I love just reading through their offerings.
SweetDomesticity replied about 1 year ago
I hear ya!  Even though my garden plans are definitely full and all of my seeds have been ordered, I still have to stop and browse through every seed display I see, just in case there's a hidden treasure to be found :)

Lol! I told my husband today that I needed more peat pots and he said "No. We need a farm! We might be able to get a mule in the backyard, but I'm not sure." I can't help myself though!
