You can place closed arches of chicken wire (or staked bird netting) over the planted seeds to keep small and large birds away from them until they have become established. Crows decided I had planted the beans in the wrong place and pulled the sprouts up and left to die on top of the dirt (didn't even eat them, little buggers)

@FreyjaW: Those crows! Grrrrr..... I have magpies and nosy ducks to deal with. Luckily a good friend bought me a couple of those long plastic tents with hoops. I will post photos soon, they are cheap things but so far seem to do the trick. I will plant my patty pans and courgette outside soon, and might use my old linen curtain sheers to keep the birds off, but then there's the slugs (who slimed my last batch of pumpkins to death).
