25 May 2011 - arugula seedlings and a dahlia bulb. Will it work?

It took a little time...

... but I finally did something on the balcony. I had planted seeds because I thought I'd start growing herbs and salad instead of flowers. But I just NEED flowers! And veg is so cheap in my neighborhood. So I broke down and bought my usual impatiens and an aster and remembered the dahlia bulb I bought at IKEA.

This is the first time I am using my balcony compost. All the worms I had collected for the bin have died, except one. So sad. But probably good for the compost! I don't know if this is how it is supposed to look, it doesn't seem totally decomposed, but it does smell nice and it is fluffy and dark, so I mixed it in with my old soil and tossed in some organinic time-released fertilizer. And things should be good to go. And all this in a couple of hours, before our house guests arrived....

You certainly have a lot going on on your balcony....How big is it?  All the things you have growing, your composting, starting of seedlings, etc. make it seem like it is huge.

@Liz: Thanks, but it's not that big, maybe 100 sq ft. Cutting back from a giant balcony (about 320 sq ft) has been tough, so I also do the Amsterdam Street Garden to satisfy my green thumb.

I have some balcony tomatoes for you if you want. And I have plenty of lettuce seed! You can also try a climbing eggplant? Again have a seedling for you ;)!

@Kris:Climbing eggplant! I like it! I would love to see your garden, I'll bike over for a visit! And thanks for posting so much on YourGardenShow- I noticed, once you scratch the surface, there are lots of secret gardeners... even in the advertising world!

This is amazing! Only a Dutch would be able to squeeze a garden like this into their own small balcony! :)) Keep up the good work!

@mariuszah:Thanks! Actually I am an American in Holland - but the Dutch have taught me everything I know (and of course my mom!). And when you love gardening as much as I do - and have so little space - you learn fast!
