    I am not sure this is a caterpillar...seems like I have heard it called something else.

Looks like  Pipevine Swallow Tail Caterpillar.  Makes a black butterfly.  I guess caterpillars can do a lot of damage if there are lots of them, but I sure love butterflies!

@JMTKMS: You are probably correct we have a lot of black butterflies!  We pretty much expect for caterpillars to chew on things this time of year especially the new oak leaves.  I also enjoy the butterflies!
