Eep! If I had to guess I'd say powdery mildew?
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@tallulahshines:  Hmmm what should I treat it with?  You don't have a video for it do you?  :)
tallulahshines replied about 1 year ago
@Clenram: yep julia42 is totally on it! the 50/50 milk/water (i just used my leftover milk from my morning bowl of cereal) thing works! But those bad leaves I'd go ahead and take off and get them away from all those other squash!
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@tallulahshines: OK
RoriTx replied about 1 year ago
@Clenram: Tell Jesse I said if it was on a trellis you would have helped prevent that.
CreativeGreenThumb replied about 1 year ago
@tallulahshines:Yep, that's powdery mildew.  Try not to get the leaves wet when watering.  Maybe put the hose underneath the plant and water that way.  Try applying some liquid seaweed and see if that helps.
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@CreativeGreenThu...: trying the milk.  I do have some liquid sea weed.  will try that if the milk does not  work.

Last year when I had it on my squash I used a milk and water mixture that took care of it - although yours has it pretty bad!  I think if I were you, I'd pick off the worst leaves and spray the others.  I think it was about 1/4 cup milk in a 1 liter spray bottle filled the rest of the way with water.  You have to keep at it - spray every day or every other day, early in the morning before the sun is too strong.

@julia42: I will give it a try!
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@julia42: buttermilk...powdered milk...whole milk?
julia42 replied about 1 year ago
@Clenram: I think I used 2%.  It's some protein in the milk that's supposed to be disagreeable to the fungus, so I imagine any milk would work...

@julia42: Thanks!  You are awesome!

@Clenram: I hope you get it nipped in the bud before it spreads.

@RoriTx:  I hope so...:)

Boy, I am not sure but I feel like my squash get a little of this each year, and I do not treat it at all and the squash do just fine.  Does this kill the plant if it is too bad?
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@JMTKMS: I don't know...hoping to find out more here.  :)
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@JMTKMS:  The squash seem to still be growing.

I'm new to squash...is there anything I can do to prevent it? How does it come about?
julia42 replied about 1 year ago
@linzelu100: I think you can spray the milk preventatively if you want, but it's really not that big of a deal unless it gets really bad.  It's basically a fungus like mildew.  It starts out looking like very pale dusty polka dots on the leaves.  Other curcubits can get it too.
BeeGuiled replied about 1 year ago
@Clenram:  I had this powdery mildew on my squash too, and I think it was caused by planting too close together and watering at night.  Early morning is best because the water on the leaves dries quickly.  Drip hose is even better- no water gets on the leaves. By planting farther apart the plant gets better air circulation.  That helps prevent mildew.  I am happy to hear milk works, because I don't use chemicals on my veggies.

I've also heard compost tea discourages fungus and pests  here is a site to help:  http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/airwaste/wm/recycle/tea/tea1.htm There are other sites on the web, this just happend to be the first I clicked on and looked easy to follow.

Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@JMTKMS: thanks@ I have been getting the ugly leaves off and did put the milk solution on.  It seems to be doing better.  I have picked a few little zucchini... not that much yet.
BeeGuiled replied about 1 year ago
How are your squash doing now?  I hope you have baskets full!  Last year I had 5 squash plants and was giving away baskets to the neighbors.
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@BeeGuiled:  The plants are looking better, but I am not getting that many squash....lots of male flowers, but not many squash.  I have gotten some more since it rained.  I hope they start producing soon, before the heat gets too high.
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
@Clenram:  Lots of male flowers and no female?? Sure hope they get it together soon.  :)
BeeGuiled replied about 1 year ago
Try adding a high phosphorous fetilizer...maybe some "Super Bloom."
Clenram replied about 1 year ago
@BeeGuiled:  Will give it a go...

How are you squash doing now?
Clenram replied 12 months ago
@BeeGuiled:  The scallop squash did great but the zuccini  did not.  I am still gettting a few of the white scallop squash even in the heat.  They are wonderful sliced and grilled with Olive oil.
BeeGuiled replied 12 months ago
Cool!  I love the scallops...planted them this year, but late. I got burnt out on zuchinni last year so I went for scallops this year.

Oh, my chicks came in, all healthy and growing fast.  We were watching them this morning and by this afternoon I think their feathers have grown a quarter inch, today!  Amazing.  We are already composting their manure. Im keeping them in the house til end of August, because of the heat. My sister and Adam's mom will get their share next month, so crowding won't be an issue, as they grow. Check out my site for pics.
