Like most of the garden, they got off to a slow start, but are coming along nicely now.

It's green fleshed, flavor is like a combination of honey dew and cantaloupe.
CommonSenseHomesteading replied 10 months ago
Have you tried Swan Lake honeydew?  It's my favorite.

It's planted right in an old manure pile that had pumpkins and squash last year.
The great sunchoke battle Jun 16, 2012
Activity-icon-status

It all started innocently enough.

Somewhere I read about this native vegetable that was great for diabetics – or maybe it was that episode of Top Chef where one of the contestants made a sunchoke and spinach puree that the judges just raved about.  It could have been an article on easy care perennial ... ...see more

Oh, I'm sorry to hear this. It must have poured here for half an hour, and then some later on too.

How's the garden?
CommonSenseHomesteading replied 10 months ago
Keeping me very busy!  We finally got rain, and now everything that survived has taken off like wildfire.

Tried this on my melons this year. Worked out nicely.
CommonSenseHomesteading replied 11 months ago
Glad to hear that, Mary.  I've used it for peppers, eggplant and okra, too - anything that can use a little extra warmth and protection.

Nice selection of seeds.....Strawberry Popcorn sounds interesting.....I have never grown celery so that should also be interesting to see how it grows.  Happy planting!
CommonSenseHomesteading replied about 1 year ago
We purchased some strawberry popcorn at a local farm stand and it was very good, so I'm looking forward to growing our own.  This is celeriac, which is similar in flavor to celery but harvested for it... more »
Mild winter continues Feb 19, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Our winter has been milder than normal, with snowfall well below average.  Temps are in the upper 30's again today.  Local builders say that even without the normal snow cover, the ground isn't frozen at deep as normal.

I had my son and husband move one of our recycled patio door out to one of the cold frames to start preheating... ...see more

Season winding down Nov 10, 2011
Activity-icon-status

On Monday the boys and I potted for celery plants and one parsley plant and moved them into the greenhouse.  I harvested enough parsley to fill the dehydrator, and froze and dehydrated the rest of the celery.  We picked the last of the cabbage and will make kraut this week.  All that left to harvest is kale, Brussels spouts,... ...see more

Digging Potatoes Oct 23, 2011
Activity-icon-status

It was a glorious day yesterday - warm and sunny, virtually no wind.  We took advantage of the great day to dig potatoes for storage in the root cellar.  We had a pretty good harvest this year of Adirondack reds, Shepodys, Yukon golds, Blue Golds and German Butterballs.

First we pulled back the straw and moved it to other garden... ...see more

Windy and Wet Oct 21, 2011
Activity-icon-status

Really nasty out today, very wet and windy.  We cleared out the last of the tomatoes earlier this week and brought them inside.  The plants looked rough, but there were still salvageable tomatoes.  There are still a few regular flowers in bloom, plus the broccoli are flowering beautifully, so in between the wind and rain the... ...see more
