My garden and many of my first plant purchases started in the dry dark shade in back of my first apartment.  I had to beg everything but the most tolerant shade plants to grow (hostas, creeping jenny, dead nettle) and when I moved I took them with me.  I couldn't leave my friends behind (is that creepy?).  My garden has evolved over the last 11 years and can happily accommodate anything I want to grow--sun lovers, shade lovers and anything in between.  My current project is turning 2+ acres of mowed lawn on my new rural farmstead home into a nearly mow free zone using attractive ground covers, a wide variety...
