We made it through two nights of frost/freeze by covering everthing we could with everthing we had (blankets, sheets, boxes)! Now Spring, do your magic!

Wet Weekend - New Plantings Mar 26, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Had a nice rain over the weekend. Fortunately I had sown 2nd plantings of snow peas, 1st plantings of bush, wax and pole beans, starts for grey and black beauty zuccinni, yellow straightneck squash and two types of cuccumbers. Everything was water in nicely by the rain. Also worked up more compost to make room for the next batch... ...see more

On the first day of spring I found the first tomato on a volunteer cherry Sweet 100 plant. Someone told me that the volunteer might produce something quite different from last year's plant - so we'll see.  Another problem is the tomato plants are outgrowing my hot-box frame. I'm not able to put the tomato cages up until I take... ...see more

Catching up! Mar 19, 2012
Activity-icon-status

Was away on business for 5 days - what a change in the garden is such a short time! Yesterday we havested beets, radishes, lettuce, green onions, spinnach and swiss chard - all of which were enjoyed with a grilled petit filet! We have a house guest visiting from Kansas City, so we took her to visit WingHaven Garden and Bird Sanctuary... ...see more

74 today in Charlotte!  Planted more radishes and lettuce seeds as part of my staggered planting/harvest plan.  Lost my three Early Girl Bush tomatoes a couple of nights ago to a freeze.  I had them covered but not heated.  Everything (including 5 other tomato plants did fine in the heated covered beds.

Nice gentle 1/2 inch of rain overnight with a low of 58 allowed all the beds (which I left uncovered)to get a soaking. Forecast of sunny and 70s for the weekend will get me out there making a trellis and planting snow peas!
