The Tomatoes are in!

By: FreyjaW
May 26, 2012
After working hard putting the rows together and sad breaking of some stems :( the tomatoes are in the ground. Notably the San Marazano Gigante 3 did quite poorly for the second year of trying them. I was hoping it was just the early planting that stunted them, but alas it wasnt. I wont be planting them next year. My 2nd year Yellow Pears are doing awesome (fingers crossed will produce well too) Happy Gardening, Go Go Green Thumbs!!!!

What keeps the metal posts from tilting with the weight of the plants?
FreyjaW replied 9 months ago
40 in long 3/4in conduit "stakes" put 20 in into the ground. The poles you see are 5ft long 1/2in conduit and slide inside the "steaks" you can adjust the height with sand (we have a lot of rocks, so soil level inside the steaks varies)

I see. The stakes anchor the poles and you can take out the poles for the winter, if you like. I'm thinking of a similar scheme for poly tunnels to keep the beds going longer in late fall/early winter.

yep thats the idea and the "steaks" are movable/reusable (we are still playing with the garden layout) oh and its galvanizedÂ... 10ft pieces at home improvement stores for $2-3 cheapest garden poles I've found just requires a little cutting (hacksaw) and I added eye bolts with nut (drill hole) at the top to reuse the support wire. If you go to johnnys seeds site they have a video about hoop house making/set up, good info even if you dont buy the bender.

Thank you for the note about the video at johnny's.  Heading over there now.
Apropos of inexpensive garden supplies, I use conduit too and a lot of 3/8 inch rebar (and I have a pipe bender that makes making curved pieces very easily). There's a photo of  a clematis tower made of re-bar at "Our Grounds" here on YourGardenShow.com
