| Treating yard for grubs and flying pests May 31, 2012 | |
|

Today I made a tonic to treat my lawn and yard for grubs and flying pests. It was a recipe I found online using: 1 beer--non-diet; 1 soda -non-diet; 1 cup of mouthwash; 1 cup ammonia; 1 dish soap. I put the whole mixture into a bucket and gave it a good stir then I poured it into a hose-end sprayer with a dial. I initially... ...see more |

Garden and greenhouse pictures taken May 29 2012: most things seem to be growing well; there are few transplants which seem to be frozen in time. I am guessing the plant will take off as soon as the root system is well established. I found a few ripe st

Last fall I saved several sunflower heads for the birds; the birds hardly touched the seeds so they are sprouting all over my yard. I took several heads and rubbed out the seeds along the fence line so they could sprout and grow; this seemed to make them more tasty for the birds who are now eating them. Even so, I still have... ...see more |

I have a pair of bright yellow birds keeping other birds but especially the humming birds from enjoying my yard. They guard both humming bird feeders and prevent the hummers from returning to my yard to feed. I added a 2nd feeder to the back yard thinking they would let my hummers return and enjoy the front feeder but... ...see more |

I planted my peas 3 weeks apart to try and stagger my harvest, but have notices 3 of the 6 plantings all have flowers at the same time. for the past 2 weeks we have enjoyed the young flat pods in stir-fry meals as well as fresh off the plant. It is challenging to track productivity when we keep eating them before I can bring... ...see more |

| Transplanted canteloupes into green house May 15, 2012 | |

I transplanted the canteloupes to the long bed along the north wall of the greenhouse. There are bush beans in front of the melon plants on the left side of the bed, and peas growing up the trellis on the right side of the bed. Even if the peas are not done growing; perhaps the shade from the melon leaves will keep the soil moist... ...see more |

This is my year to grow as much produce as possible and to use the savings to pay down my debt and rebuild my family emergency fund. We eat a lot of fruits and vegetables; I have spent up to $80 in produce for a 2-week period for 3 people. My challenge is to grow what we need in movable planters and pots; I rent so when I leave so will my garden. I hope to be here another 1 to 2 years and then be able to buy the house and stay put. Once I am a homeowner, I will start putting things directly into the grown so both my plants and I can sprout roots. I created a plant wish list of the food and flower...
