Two days ago this hellebore had one one emerging stalk with flower bud (see the photo on Apr 05, 2011). Today there are three (one is half-hidden and still small between the two big ones). There will be more. You can sense the size of the plant underground by the placement of these stalks and buds. The crown grows bigger each year and adds buds for stalks and flowers. Last year, thanks to the long leaf stalks and big leaves, the plant was 18 inches tall and twice as wide.
