Baptisia in full bloom

May 16, 2010
Baptisia takes awhile to reach full bloom. The flower stems are tall and the flowers ladder up the stems, with the bottommost opening first and the topmost opening last. Two weeks or more go by from the time the first and last flowers open and in between comes a moment when the greatest number of flowers are open at the same time. That moment is now in my Zone 5 garden. My plant could be 'Carolina Moonlight,' a hybrid of two native U.S. species, but I'm not sure. I have to keep better records.
