Prairie smoke flower

May 20, 2010
This is a hardy perennial, native to the northern U.S. When the flowers open and make seeds they also make a cloud of plumes that carry the seeds away on the wind. When many flowers mature at once and have plumes the plant looks like haze or smoke--hence the common name. The botanical name is Geum triflorum.
