Frosted last night and turning watery today, a new host a leaf.

Back to normal, sort of

Apr 21, 2012
We had a freakishly warm winter (winter by the calendar) and several days in the 80s as winter came to an end (by the calendar). The we hit a cold three weeks, temperatures closer to normal for early Spring here in Z5. So far awhile Spring was colder than Winter. Then it warmed a little and then it turned cold. For two days running  we had nights close to freezing. No damage to plants, though all had dropped their winter hardiness and budded, fooled into thinking real Spring had arrived. Last night, somehow, frost got a few young hosta leaves. Which is about right for this time on the calendar. The average day for the last frost here in mid-Iowa is usually listed as May15. So we're not safe yet, as the hostas discovered. That is, if we're back to normal. We'll see.

Here in Indiana as well. It has held in the 40's most of the day today...not conducive to digging in the plants!

It has been crazy here in Maine also.  We didn't have the snow we normally have, it has been a dry spring.  We did get rain last night and more coming. The weather has been warm for us but I get nervous because we could end up with snow in May.  Some people don't put their tomatoes in until June 15th here, TG for greenhouses.

@mainegarden:  I think it is great that you have greenhouses.  Do you run heaters?  If I had a greenhouse it would only be for two months probably.  It would be good to have one for July, and August here if there was a way to cool them.

I will trade you some hot air for some cool air.  :)  it is 94 degrees now.
Can you take a look at this plant of Rori's?

@Clenram: I'm in pursuit of the identity of Rori's mystery plant. Meanwhile, another weather report about Iowa. Two frosts last week and at least three more weeks of peril, if averages count for anything these days. No tomatoes in the ground until mid-May.

Definitely crazy weather. Hope your garden doesn't suffer too much. My sister lives in Orange City, IA and planted a few tomatoes in her garden even before I did here in TX. Hope all goes well for you. I'm getting ready to go out and cover my dwarf banana plant because of the 43 degree night we're supposed to have tonight.
