The magnolia's rootball with the main roots circling the bottom and no sign of them above. All the potting mix has to go so I can trace the major roots. Teasing out the potting mix breaks a lot of fine roots, but no matter. Be gentle and patient. Some folks wash away the potting mix with a hard spray of water. It works, but it's messy. If you use water, move away from the planting site.
