Young leaves of chives emerging from a mat of dead, dried old leaves and a few leaf stems from the honeylocust overhead. Chives are a perennial and at just two or three years old a single plants makes a beautiful fountain of slender leaves, then a cloud of pink pompom flowers on thin stems. Chop the leaves to garnish soups and baked potatoes, the flavor is mild and onion-y. Vegetable? Herb? Ornamental? All three.
