This is penstemon, a prairie perennial, but it's a cultivar selected for its dark leaves. It's called 'Husker Red' in honor of the football team of the University of Nebraska. The flowers come much later and are white. Here the new stalks are just a few inches tall and the leaves are much more red they will be later (when they're a blackish-purple). Last year's stalks, broken-off give an idea of the footprint. The plant is five years old.
