The University of Minnesota has bred and introduced many extra-hardy version of plants that used to be too tender for Zone 5 or frigid Zone 4. There's a whole series (meaning several colors) of azaleas under the title 'Northern Lights.' The one in the photograph is 'Rosy Lights,' flowering today on a plant that is eight years old, which means it has survived many z5 winters. The other colors include pink, white, and yellow. Like all azaleas these hardy cultivars need acid soil. Mine has neutral soil due to my reluctance to change the pH in just one spot in the garden. As a result the plant has remained small. It could be six feet by six feet if it were growing in ideal conditions
