The big jagged leaves of hellebores make me think they're still ready to defend themselve against grazing dinosaurs. Meanwhile, the new shoots and flowers show up earlier than any perennial I know. In fact I just found this Helleborus niger in bloom and I still can't believe it. Early March?

I have not seen this flower before.

Very nice photo of Helleborus Niger! I am always amazed how early these bloom too. My Helleborus 'Josef Lemper' has been blooming for at least a month now. Helleborus x hybridus 'Mardi Gras Apricot' has a bud on it now, and it will be in full bloom before long too. They bloom for months! Helleborus HGC Snow Frills is starting to form buds as well.

All true. Hellebores bloom a long, long time. Even when the flowers fade, they hold, as if made of paper, and look good for more months.

There are lots of reason to love this plant!

I totally agree. One of my mine is blooming under a shrub holly, where it gets very little sun. If I let the two plants fight it out the hellebore might win. But they make a good combination these days.

I'll bet that is a pretty combination. They both set each other off. Very nice.
