This peony was a tiny seedling two Springs ago. I almost pulled the seedling, thinking it was a weed, but something made me wait a second and then it hit me, it's a peony. I don't know how it got there or where it came from. There are other peonies, old ones, in the garden, but not nearby. By the end of the first growing season, the little peony had three stems. The next year it had seven or eight stems and seven or eight flowers. (By the way the flower turned out to be unusual. You can see it here.). This year the plants has eighteen stems by my count  and eighteen flowers buds. I may invite the neighborhood to a viewing. I had no idea a seedling peony could mature and grow so fast. It's fun. Sort of like winning the lottery.

Wow, I have never heard of anyone having a peony self seed like that.  How wonderful!!!

@mainegarden: If you visited the link, you saw how unusual the flower is--no pistils or stamens, instead tiny petals (petaloids) in a dense cluster and all of them are variegated (whoa!). so where did this variegation come from? None of my common peonies have petaloids, let alone variegated petaloids.

@Groundskeeper: Have you gotten in touch with any of the peony people? Maybe there is a hybrid in the neighborhood....????  I wish it had shown up in my yard!

@mainegarden: No, but I will. I know a few breeders and Tony Avent, who loves to introduce cool plants but I'm waiting until I see this year's flowers. I'll post photos here then.
