great bench.  It is nice to have a place to rest after hours of gardening.  I can guess by the size of your garden you spend hours there. Lovely place you have.

Thanks Jeanie, From the looks of your photos you spend a considerable amount of time gardening too. Its the only way if you are going to produce a significant amount of your family's food. I can't think of many better ways to spend my days.

I work full time and overtime as a nurse.  My significant other, Adam does most of the heavy labor.  I do the planning and planting.   I couldnt do it without him. I want to learn to can and dry foods so that is what I am studying lately. We've given away more than we could eat. What is important to me is the quality.  I KNOW it doesn't have chemicals, because we don't use them. Is your place organic?

We farm organically, though that term is starting to get a bit watered down. I'm starting to favour agroecologically... bettter. As for food storage, when you get the time also look into freezing, fermentation and root cellaring. What zone are you? You might be able to get away with storing some items, in particular roots, under mounds or the like in the ground. There is an excellent free on-line canning course available through the University of Georgia, which takes about a day or so to complete: http://nchfp.uga.edu/ Mother Earth news has an excellent book on Root Cellaring of various forms and Sandor Katz's book 'Fermentation' is the best on that subject. ps beautiful flowers!

zone 8b. Texas. We dont have a root cellar.  It's too hot and potential for flooding, I guess. I am building a dehydrator this summer.  A neighbor gave us a bay window and it was a little too beat up to put on the house, so we used it in the garden like a cold frame.  Adam is going to mount it on a frame and put shelves and a door on the back. Then we can use it like a greenhouse or wash it out and use it like a dehydrator. i'll post pics this summer.
