Patterns of Growth Fremont, CA

My garden is my art, literally. I grow plants so I can photograph them in new and interesting ways. There is such a variety of plants in the San Francisco Bay Area and I pluck not only from my yard, but along the trail...

2010 Garden and Greenhouse Hill City, SD

We started gardening in 2008 with 96 square feet of raised beds and quickly grew to love having soil under our fingernails.  Next, in 2009, my husband built my greenhouse with around 110 square feet of space so we...

The Lazy Gardener with the Light Green Thumb Cle Elum, WA

I started a container garden in 2011 just to see if I had a green thumb. I live in Eastern WA on the north slope of a mountain at 2,300 ft, so I was worried gardening might be challenging on my property. I'm up against...

I have never grown tomatoes under lights other than to start them.  So I did a search and this is what I found out.  When starting tomato seeds,  fluorescent lights should be used.  The metal halide lights are used when tomatoes are growing.  When the fruits are setting, high pressure sodium lights should be used.  I hope this helps.

Mr. Schutz,  I have been admiring your pictures.  And I have a few questions.  I noticed that your planting beds are raised somewhat higher than the path, is this because your soil is wetter than "normal"?  I have property that I call "wetland".  It stays wet until about July or August depending on how much rain we get here in Southeast Oklahoma, which recently has not been a lot.  Usually June is fairly mild but July, August & September are very hot months. I know my grandfather planted a garden in this plot years ago but now no one seems to remember (if they ever knew) his trick to get his garden to grow.  I plan to begin clearing an area and planting a small garden soon.  I think I need to start small and then see how it turns out. Anyway, any advice you can give me I would greatly appreciate.

This past summer I was out in my garden all day, 6 days a week. It was hard work but I just loved it.I have been planning on converting our property (360 ft) into an edible landscape and veggie garden. Everyone has been telling me that I won't be able to do it/keep up with it, and that it's too large. You and your garden have encouraged me so much, next time I get a comment, I'm showing them your pictures! You have a gorgeous garden, and the different varieties you have are amazing. Keep it up!

Welcome to the site JJS.  You have taught this dog some new tricks and have inspired me.  Although I haven't been able to put a garden of this size in this year, I am less daunted seeing what you have done (and having to stave off critters too!) so who knows what will pop out on the old farm in Umbria come next spring!GLOG was the reason I wanted to build the site,  and you have been the first gardener to take it to a level I only thought was possible.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement to GLOG -- and my husband and I will incorporate them.   So great to meet you and I look forward to seeing the growth of your cool project.Best,Lisa
