He's a goofy goat and we like his horns, but when he and my daughter were playing, he almost took her eye out by accident. Scary how close it was, my daughter was shaking for hours. But, she is mended and we all learned to appreciate that his horns are dangerous even it "he" is not.
@JMTKMS:our goats came dehorned from the 4H kid we bought them from. Altho one of the goats seems to grow them back - but then after they get like an inch or so long they get broken off and it bleeds just a tiny little bit - its weird. Guessing who ever did the dehorning on that one didn't do it 100% correctly... Maybe the carrots are a good idea to keep on there so she can't get hurt by the horns... =) That would be scary tho!!!
@PYehl: We got Jed by accident, asked the landlord if we could borrow a weed eater and my husband came home with a goat! We did not know about de-horning, until it was to late to do it to Jed. We have heard that it is rather painful for the goats... so we we fine with him having horns. We are just very careful and keep the little (grandkids) kids away from him.
@JMTKMS:From the looks of it he does a fine job of weed eating... that is why we got our 3 goats too - to "mow" the old horse pasture so I don't have to mow the bumpy gutted area. Horses are too expensive and just don't feel like I'm in control with them - my ex had them here. So figured the goats would be more my control size... like large dogs. But they try to eat more of the trees than the pasture, altho it seems this year they are doing better than the previous years... they still have a LOT to eat out there tho! Its about a 3/4 acre pasture. We love our boys tho... fun pets!
@PYehl: Not sure Jed is a very good weed eater, other than when I pick the weeds and feed them to him. He really likes to eat anything we do not want him to eat. Scary with the un-fenced gardens, as he does escape so... and we fear that he may end up doing alot of damage. So far we have been lucky.
@JMTKMS:yeah we had to install an electric wire along the top and the bottom of the pasture... those tricky goats are good escape artists! Thing is when they did escape (before elec fencing) - they would just come to the back patio and whine for use to come give them attention - they are worse than dogs for attention!!!
@PYehl: Yes! Worse than dogs! They are such attentions "wanters". Jed cries all day when we are outside and if we copy him, he will talk with us. He is too funny. I guess that is why they are good companion animals. I really wish we did not have to keep him in a pen. When he was younger we just let him run about. The kids and him would run and jump and bump back and forth in to each other. Only now that he is bigger and so much stronger and has BIG horns, they cannot play like that anymore.
