Garlic & Hot Pepper Spray

By: JMTKMS
May 08, 2012
Went to "The Dirt Doctor (.com)" and found a recipe.  2 cloves garlic2 very hot peppers wholelittle bit of waterblend in blenderstrain liquid  - add to 1 gallon water - This is the concentrateadd 1/4 c concentrate to 1 gallon water - use to spray plantsSeems to me that this is a little week, can the spray hurt the plants?  Can I use a stronger mix if it is not helping at the strength that it is?   Kinda thinking I should let the garlic and peppers soak for a while before blending??  Any suggestions?  Have you done this spray with good results?

What exactly is this spray mixture recommend to address?

@EZ_Gee:  Suppose to be a good bug repellent.  I have heard alot about it, but this is the first time I have felt that I actually needed to use something.

I've used the garlic & pepper spray in the past (well last 2 years of my gardening experience) ... my measurements aren't really exact.  I haven't had a lot of problems with the exception of stink bugs - not sure I can attribute that to the spray.  I've let the mixture "set" or blend for a couple of hours before using - of course, I've had some left over that I've let set for days.  I mixed up some pepper & egg spray as suggested by another gardener for a deer repellant.

@vanna516: Well, I guess I will just watch for a few days, if things do not improve I will try a stronger solution...  If that does not work, I will look for more ideas.  Thanks.

I've used one similar, it worked well for most bugs but did nothing for the grasshoppers.

@Jentheo:  Thank goodness, and knock on wood, that I do not have grasshoppers.  But, thank you, I will remain hopeful till we see what happens.  :)

@JMTKMS:Let us know how it goes for you.  I don't have anything planted outside yet and the slugs are already here :O(    The only bug problem I had were the little green worms (cabbage white butterfly) but I put potted mint out by the broc and cabbage.

@mainegarden:  So the mint really takes care of those bugs?  I should be really safe then, because I have a whole field (farmer) of mint right next to my pasture.  I will get a few plants and spread them around the garden.  Queen of Green said that she would try a drop or two of dawn dish soap in a spray bottle of water for the bugs, that this works very well.  I had already used the garlic spray, but if it does not work, I will try the soap spray next.  It does look like the bugs are alot worse this year.

So far this spray appears it may be working.  The beans have not lost a leaf since I sprayed.  I will keep observing.
