The tomato challenge! Which are which???

By: JMTKMS

Well, when I planted my tomato seeds in the ground, I tried to stir up the dirt and remove any volunteer plants and seeds.  I figured if I planted my "one" seed in the middle of the circle, I would be able to find it and know it was the one I planted.     Does not seem to be working this way.  There are so many volunteers that I am sure they have gotten mixed up with what I thought was my "one" seed.     I guess I will have to replant my tomatoes in paper cups, then plant them when they have sprouted and I can tell which is which.  Another lesson learned!

I'm not laughing at your predicament but maybe smiling cause I'm glad I'm not the only one that things like this happen too ... sounds like you have a game plan though ... again I'm amazed that the tomatoes would do that - I've had squash & potatoes from my compost but not tomatoes.

These did not come from the compost, the seeds were just from tomatoes ... had fallen and then got tilled into the ground.  I am really at a loss, I do not want to pull them all, but I really do want to know what I have planted.  I spoke to John, and I think we may put up a new tomato fence this week-end.  I have just finished planting my tomato collection in pots so I will know what I am planting when the fence is done.    It would not be such a trouble, except that there are just SO many of them.  :(

@JMTKMS: Guess we are kindred spirits in a way ... I wouldn't want to pull all the volunteers either.

@vanna516:  I know.  I am arguing with myself constantly as I pull some and then leave a bigger healthier one, thinking "maybe I can find this one a home".  Crazy and it is driving me crazy.  But, in the end I guess you can never have to many tomatoes.  Right???  :)
