Blueberry Plants........ Now What??????

By: JMTKMS
May 23, 2012
Well, I wanted them, I cried and wined about them, I searched for them and could not find them, I decided that I would have to sadly wait till next year to get them............................ Then, I found them, "BLUEBERRIES".  Now that I have them, I realize that I know nothing about them.  They need a different kind of soil (so I am told), acid may need to be added.  I purchased 3 plants, 3 different types - Elliott, Berkeley and Patriot.  All three are supposed to grow to 6 feet and (of course) be very productive.  They are rather small right now, and one plant has berries on it.  I assume that they will loose the berries and the blooms this year from the shock... but how do I plant them, should I do it right now, and what fertilizer should I use.  Help would be appreciated, but of course.... I will see what is on the "net", if needed.  Now next year is even more exciting!!!  Just keeps getting better.

We have two nice size blueberry plants in half barrels.  Used bagged potting soil--but, I add our coffee grounds to it (read somewhere the grounds helped with acids.)   **& Bought two of the brand new Pink Lemonade Blueberries this year!! (the itty bitty Pink Lemonade "might" be big enough to hold "a" berry each, right now!!!)  I think I will have to eventually put them in the ground, for them to grow very high............Gurneys sells blueberry food(I've not ordered the blueberry food yet.)---our main pest---squirrels and bright green caterpillars.  We chase the squirrels out and pick the caterpillars off the leaves when they arrive.

@Sandyfroglegs:  Thank you.  Coffee grounds, I ve got those... and lots of them.  I saw the pink lemonade, but figured  what I really wanted was a blueberry... once those are set and producing, then I can venture in to new territory.

@RoriTx:  How sad, I hope the future brings you blueberry success!

@RoriTx:I with you on the blueberries ... tried 2 years ago & last year - all dead including the raspberries plants.  Luckily I get to raid my neighbor's - she probably has 9 (at least) very mature bushes.

@vanna516:  How nice of your neighbor to share.  I am really hopeful for mine, and I will be getting the scoop from the site PYehl has recommended....  I really want th... to grow.  Positive thinking (I hope) counts for something!  :) :)

we have 5 blueberry bushes.  I added a lot of peat to the soil when I planted them, I keep them well mulched (with goat bedding) and add a special blueberry fertilizer compound I bought from Stark Bros Nursery... which helps feed them but also with acid needs.  3 of my bushes I've had now for about 4-5 yrs and are getting some good size to them - 2 are babies as of last fall from Stark Bros.      Here is a blog they did about blueberries:  http://growingwithstark....com/?p=2274      They are a great company to deal with, when there is a problem, they will replace the item no questions asked.  We bought 2 peach trees last fall and one never did anything this spring - my new tree is on its way now.  They are also very knowledgeable and will gladly help you with any questions you may have.   Man I sound like their salesman or something...lol

@PYehl:  Thanks, I will check out that site.  I really want them to grow, I have wanted blueberry bushes for soooo long.  I did plant some once, about 10 years ago and the dog ate them, so this time I really want them to work out.  ....  Thanks for being a "salesman", that is how a good business keeps doing good business... word of mouth, happy customers.. :) :)

Okay, just went to the site, it looks very informative.  Thank you very much.  Rori should go to the site as well, as it has information on southern planting for Texas.  Very helpful, thank you very much!

Berries would be great to plant--don't they require some room? As I have none I stick to containable gardening.
PYehl replied about 1 year ago
@KittyCorral:   Look up the subject as there are blueberries that are meant to grow in containers.  Some are Top Hat, Sunshine Blue, & Northsky.   I'm sure there are more dwarf varieties than that as well.
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
@PYehl  Maybe I should have gone with the potted ones, as I am afraid they will freeze in the winter.

@KittyCorral:  The plants I have are going to get to 6 feet, but they had smaller 4 foot varieties too.

@JMTKMS:Mine are in half whiskey barrels.  There are blueberry farms around us, but most sell out before I am aware they are open. My blueberry and strawberries are buried in snow each winter and come back happy and healthy so no snow worries.

@Sandyfroglegs:  Well, I guess mine should be fine then. Thanks.  Now I just need to decide where to plant them.

Also--they grow like bushes with several branches. The farms keep them in rows but do not seem to trim them into any shape.
