Excellent point. OK, we're gonna get this fence up pronto or we're gonna have a freezer full of chickens! Haha, nah, but they're definitely on the bad list. We need to fence anyway, not that it will be 100... more »

I don't know, our horned worms never attacked the bottom of the plants, only the tops.  Guess it was easy to lay an egg there and they don't move much.

Your puppy sure is cute. And those are some nice, lush greens.

Thanks! She's a clown. We just harvested many pounds of spinach because I hadn't been keeping up on it and the leaves were getting huge and rather bitter. Still delicious sauteed and on sandwiches though. ... more »

Our rhubarb is all bolting. We planted our friend's divided excess and it's been doing great, but now it's starting to bolt. Any advice? Should I cut down the blossoming stalks?
SweetDomesticity replied about 1 year ago
Yes.  That happened to mine last year, and I just cut the blossom stalks off and I continued to have a fantastic rhubarb season.
JMTKMS replied about 1 year ago
In Western Washington I had a plant in my back yard, it produced well for 7-8 years.  Then it just started bolting all the time.  I would cut it off, over and over during the season.  The Hu... more »

March 15th: The first actual rain we've seen since October 5. Thanks, clouds. Keep up the good work.
KellyB replied about 1 year ago
I must say, it did spoil a few gardening affairs we had planned, but I'll sure take it! It's been a terrible drought... we should have had about 13 inches by this time. We're at all but zero. Rather than g... more »

We really got some rain last night. A little over 4 inches in 7 hours!
KellyB replied about 1 year ago
4 inches in 7 hours sounds divine. We are supposed to get more this weekend. I know beggars can't be choosers but it'd sure be nice to get some weekday rain so that we can have a productive weekend in the garden! We're getting behind!

HELP! We have major continous ant trouble, and not only does mint not seem to help, as many have suggested, but the ants have a whole colony in our potted spearmint. Desperate for suggestions of natural deterrents...

Cinnamon has been applied! Crossing our fingers....Thank you so much for the suggestion! Plus it's nice smelling :)
KellyB replied about 1 year ago
TRIUMPH!! Victory! Cinnamon worked like a charm, and quickly. I waited to respond so I could water the pots and see if any ants came out. NONE. It had been two teeming colonies and whenever I watered they'... more »

Your garden is fabulous, I haven't done anything yet! Congrats on the awesome job you're doing!
KellyB replied about 1 year ago
Thank you! It's so rewarding. Considering we've had no rain at all, at least it's nice weather for being outside and gardening!

have you had experience using this before this year? My in laws give us all their newspaper for starting our winter fres but I often wonder if the newspaper pots are sturdy enough as the compressed store bought forms.
KellyB replied about 1 year ago
Made this way, they're very sturdy. I have used them before. You can wrap as many layers of newspaper as you care to to make it more solid, but one strip works fine. You can plant the whole pot with fragil... more »
