Gardening since 2010
A 25 year old theatre artist, gardening is something I've become passionate about in very short amount of time. I also bake bread, have two house rabbits who rule my life (who do you think I'm growing all these veggies for?) and love to bake for my housemates and friends. I'm interested in becoming more of an urban homestead, and to that effect I've built my own composter and 100 gallon rain barrel system. I'm looking forward to learning how to make my own cheese and preserve what I grow, and am interested in intentional communities of like minded people.

Hello, I just found your garden today after looking on instructables.com for container gardens and then followed you here.  I am so thrilled to find such great ideas! I, too am a beginner.  I am a stay at home mom with 2 sons.  One is in college and the other is 13 and enjoys gardening with me.  My husband likes to eat. haha I am trying to do everything organically. We tried container gardening last year before we moved here but did not have adequate sun as I was trying it on a covered porch.  It was a sad and expensive lesson. This year I have a deck.  I am also renting.  I am doing containers for that very reason because we are looking to purchase a home sometime soon. I'd love to correspond with you and learn more.  My 13 year old son and I are doing this garden together and it would be great to be able to learn with you.  Jason loves your bunnies and would love to have one of his own when we move but I have heard they are somewhat difficult.  We already have a Siamese cat and a Jack Russell.  I don't know if either would get along with bunnies. How do you collect their droppings?  Sorry if that's a stupid question...  :-) You seem to have jumped in with lots of plants.  I have heard that celery is very hard to grow. Yesterday we bought some Earthboxes and planted tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans and squash.  I planted swiss chard, 6 kinds of basil, chocolate mint, oregano, and rosemary in conventional containers as I couldn't afford any more Earthboxes.  After learning from you, I will head out on payday and purchase some boxes to create some of your boxes and transplant what I have in the conventional pots.  I like the colanders you use.  Where did you get the ones in your 5 gallon buckets from?    I hope to hear from you soon and please fell free to email me at max8beta@gmail.com if it's easier.  I check email often. @Momffy: Congrats on your move and on your garden! I would not recommend rabbits for a child, or for a family with as many pets as yours. They are a demanding pet, cost as much as a dog or cat, and do not like to be held. For more info on keeping rabbits as pets, please visit http://rabbit.org/ I collect my rabbits droppings when I change the litter in their litter box. I dump everything from the box, the organic litter, hay, and drop it into a plastic bag and transport them out to the compost bin that way. I would highly encourage you to check out these books from your local library (or purchase from Amazon.com) to get you started. Read them well, they will tell you better than I could how to get started gardening in containers. The Vegetable Gardener's Container Bible: How to Grow a Bounty of Food in Pots, Tubs, and Other Containers by Edward C. Smith And McGee & Stuckey's Bountiful Container: Create Container Gardens of Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits, and Edible Flowers by Rose Marie Nichols McGee, Maggie Stuckey I would suggest planting in 5 gallon containers. I do because they are much cheaper than the Earthboxes, which I cannot afford. Instructions are here: http://mckarion.wordpress.com/2009/11/29/frugal-gardner-self-watering-bucket/Ed Smith's book which I recommended above will also tell you how to make them, but uses a bit more materials. I got help and ideas from the forums over at DavesGarden.com. I would suggest checking them out once you have read those two books and studied up on the subject a bit. It's a great place for specific questions, but can be overwhelming when looking for general information. Good luck and happy gardening!
